SCHEMA THERAPY: An Integrative Therapy for Personality Change
Schema Therapy was developed by Dr. Jeffrey Young for the treament of personality disorders, chronic depression and other longstanding problems that interfere with living a satisfying life. Dr. Youong is the aurthor of a popular book: Reinventing Your Life, and director of the Cognitive Therapy Center in New York and Connecticut. This treatment approach includes elements of cognitive therapy, behavior therapy, object relations and gestalt therapy; and through a detailed assessment process helps you identify themes in your life which affect your interpretation of experiences.
Maladaptive Schemas are formed early in life increasing our likelihood of thinking, feeling or behaving in certain ways. They become like lenses or templates that form judgments, distorting our perceptions of current experiences and lead to self-fulfilling prophecies or statements of "absolute truths:"
Fears of abandonment with expectations that relationships won't last
Hypervigilance to possible signs of being mistreated
Expectations that others will let you down
Lack of self-confidence in your ability to function independently
Exaggerated fears of vulnerability to harm, danger or illness
Seeking direction and reassurance from others
Feeling you are unlovable or flawed in some basic ways
Feeling you are socially undesirable
Perceiving yourself as inept, unable to learn or achieve
Self-sacrificing your needs, placing higher importance on others
Inhibiting the expression of your emotions to avoid disapproval
Feeling overly responsible for others
Setting unrealistic standards for yourself
Exaggerating negative aspects of experiences
Believing you are "better than" and rules do not apply to you
Having inadequate self-control or self-discipline
