EXPLOSIVE AND NONCOMPLIANT CHILDREN & ADOLESCENTS - THE COLLABORATIVE PROBLEM-SOLVING APPROACH (Dr. Ross Greene and Dr.Stuart Ablon - www.explosivechild.com)
Dr. Sharona Stone has extensive experience working with children who are oppositional and defiant, those diagnosed wih bipolar depression and Attentin Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Having completed her advanced training in the Collaborative Problem-Solving Approach with Drs. Greene and Ablon, she is well qualified to work with you and your challenging child. Dr. Sharona began her clinical career after earning her first masters degree in Child Development from Tufts University. Her specialized training particularly in developmental issues attracted her to this model, The Collaborative Problem-solving Approach to working with children prone to explosive outbursts.
The foundation of this approach is based on the belief that "Children do well if they can," and when children are not doing well it is because they can't - which can be the result of a skills deficit or developmental arrest in one of six areas of functioning:
PATHWAYS OR AREAS OF FUNCTIONING
Executive Skills - the ability to organize thought processes
Social Skills - interacting appropriately with peers and adults
Language Processing Skills - the ability to understand spoken language and grasp the meaning of the messages; and the ability to use language to express wants and needs with words.
Emotional Regulation - the ability to experience feelings and express tthem in a manner that does not become overwhelming to self and others.
Flexibility and Adaptability of thinking - the ability to generate possible approaches to a problem, and to use feedback to try out other options if a strategy proves unsuccessful.
Sensory Integration - the ability to process sensory input without it overwhelming or understimulating the child.
After a thorough assessment of the child which includes:
Meeting with the child to understand his/her view of diffiulties being experienced
Identification of pathways representing areas of strengths and weaknesses
Evaluation of the family communication processes
Behavioral checklists are completed by both parents and school staff
Classroom observation
Then a treatment plan is developed addressing the Pathways or Areas of Functioning where deficits can be addressed and skill development willl be focused.
Training parents, child and teachers in this method, reduces emotional reactivity in the child and that of others in his environment, leading to a sharp decrease in explosive behavior.
